The Athens community is never in short supply of reasons to celebrate. Festival season begins in the spring and progresses through the fall season. These celebrations are for the locals to share their uniquely awesome talents and join in fun community fellowship. June brings with it the summer season and for the Athens community that means another celebration: the 11th annual Boogie on the Bricks!
Let the Sunshine In
This summer-kickoff street festival shuts down Court Street once again for a collective of free family fun! Saturday, June 20, from 12 p.m. to 11 p.m., Court Street will be filled with local merchandise: art vendors, two stages hosting talented musicians and performance artists and, of course, delicious food. While all of that is incredible, there is also a super fun Kids Zone equipped with a bounce house, games, arts and crafts, and other fun activities for parents to enjoy with their children. Boogie on the Bricks encourages the whole family to enjoy the summer festivities.
Keeping Athens Beautiful
By partnering with Rural Action and the Appalachia Ohio Zero Waste Initiative, there is hope to make Boogie on the Bricks 2015 a little greener than ever before. Recycling stations will be set up along Court Street with receptacles for bottles, cans and paper. There will also be $1 reusable souvenir cups to eliminate hundreds of disposable plastic cups. Another attempt to make Boogie on the Bricks greener is collecting vendors’ pre-consumer food waste for compost. While this street festival is fun focused, it is also conscious of our responsibility to protect our planet.
Let’s Get Involved
The easiest, most exciting way to get involved is to attend this wonderful event next Saturday, June 20. The band schedule and more information about the local bands performing can be found on the Boogie on the Bricks website. If you are looking to get more involved, this entire event is made possible by volunteers and local non-profit organizations. Information on how to volunteer or make a donation can also be found on their website. There are also a few vendor positions open if you own a food truck and would like to join the Athens community in welcoming the summer season.
What are your plans to enjoy this summer season?
