When: Saturday, September 28, 2019 at 12 PM – 4 PM
Where: Parkersburg City Park 1920 Park Avenue, Parkersburg, West Virginia 26101
Detail: It’s a Walk of Awareness, Remembrance & Celebration.  Join us in PARKERSBURG for the Out of the Darkness Mid-Ohio-Valley Community Walk September 28, 2019.   AWARENESS: It’s important we understand the intimate & powerful relationship between depression & suicide: the number one cause of suicide is untreated depression. When we recognize this, we can then realize we’re talking about a medical, not a moral matter. With this understanding we can counter the silence & stigma that surrounds depression & suicide. We can replace this stigma with the HOPE that comes with the knowledge that depression is a disease — a disease that is treatable.   REMEMBRANCE & Honor: For someone who has lost a loved one to suicide, our walk is a time to remember them. You can wear one of our Honor Beads to represent your relationship. There is a color for every relationship of life lost to suicide, as well as for those who personally battle & are surviving.  White: Loss of Child Gold: Loss of Parent Red: Loss of Spouse/ Partner Orange: Loss of Sibling Purple: Loss of Family Member/ Friend Silver: Loss of Military/ First Responder Blue: In Support of the AFSP Mission Green: For those who Personally Struggle Teal: For those with a Lived Experience   CELEBRATION: It’s a time of celebration as we can ALL raise awareness & help prevent suicide. For some, this is a time of remembering & celebrating the lives of those they’ve lost… for others this is a time to celebrate their own mental wellness & the fact that they are alive & surviving. We will take steps to promote good mental health while raising awareness & making a difference — not only in changing a life, but even in saving one!  This walk is sponsored by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, the leading non-profit organization exclusively dedicated to understanding & preventing suicide through research, education, advocacy & support. Out of the Darkness Walks are our signature fundraisers that allow us to ‘do the work’ & fund the mission around our state & nation. Please consider registering a team, or becoming a registered participant & helping us with our mission as we bring the subject of suicide “Out of the Darkness” & into the light while creating a culture that’s smarter about mental health.   To see what an Out of the Darkness Community Walk looks & feels like, or for additional resources check out our website at www.afsp.org/WestVirginia.   For more information on how to become involved with the Mid-Ohio-Valley Parkersburg Community Walk contact: Walk Coordinator Liz Ford at OOTDparkersburg@gmail.com. For more information on how to become involved with our AFSP WV Chapter contact: Michelle Toman at WestVirginia@afsp.org.   Help us create a world without suicide while honoring those we’ve lost along the way & supporting those who have a personal lived experience.   This event page is not monitored — if you, or someone you know is in crisis: Please reach out to the National Suicide Prevention LifeLine at 1-800-273-8255 (TALK).
