Guess what? It is the most wonderful time of the year… to be living in Mid-Ohio Valley or visiting, that is. No, I’m not talking about Christmas. It’s fall-festivities time in the Mid-Ohio Valley. The season is getting ready to kick off with the Washington County Fair this weekend, then… please give me a drum roll… the Ohio River Sternwheel Association will be holding its 40th Sternwheel Festival this year! And it is going to be big!
The Washington County Fair will be held September 5-8, 2015. The gates will open at 8:00 a.m. Saturday, September 5 with a grand parade held at 10:00 a.m. This is the biggest parade in town. The parade route will be as follows: Ohio Street to 2nd Street, left onto Greene Street, right onto Front Street proceeding to the Washington County Fairgrounds located at 922 Front Street, Marietta, Ohio 45750. The fair rides begin at noon. On Saturday, the fair will consist of a truck and tractor pull, horse show, poultry and beef showmanship, cake decorating, children’s coin hunts and the Little Miss and Mr. contest. It closes for the night at 11:00 p.m.
Sunday, September 6, the fair will open at 9:00 a.m. Activities consist of several different (rabbit, goat, lamb, etc.) showmanships, a horse show, Cloverbud activities, 4-H demonstration contest, goat dress-up contest, Ladies Lead show, children’s coin hunt, truck and tractor pull, then the fair closes for the night at 11:00 p.m.
Monday, September 7, the fair will run from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Events include the livestock sale, children’s coin hunt, fast truck/Motocross racing and rodeo.
Tuesday, September 8, the fair will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. The last day of the fair will consist of dairy showmanship and entertainment by country singer Dustin Lynch.
Each day the fair will have many vendors, food booths and rides. Each year the Washington County Fair provides us with great entertainment that draws in a good crowd, which continues to make it possible for the fair to be held next year. The 40th Annual Ohio River Sternwheel Festival will be held September 11-13, 2015. This is going to be a huge event because it is celebrating a milestone year! Every year residents and tourists come to the Mid-Ohio Valley to take part in the festival. Marietta, Ohio, is the home of the American Sternwheel Association. Come and enjoy the entertainment, food and refreshments from many vendors, and enjoy the river view.
Many great entertainers are lined up for this year: Striking Matches, Nico & Vinz, Michael Woods, Phil Dirt & The Dozers, The Lettermen and Dan Bremnes. Other popular events include The Little Miss and Mr. Sternwheel Pageant, Queen Candidates, Coronation of Queen Genevieve, Harry J. Robinson Memorial Fireworks and the Captain James E. Sands Memorial Races.
